Learn To Play Guitar Songs
By Rich Matthews
Many types of songs that can be played on a piano, for example, can also be played on the guitar. And, carrying your around is a lot easier than hunting around for a public piano. When learning to play songs, it is important that you develop a good fundamental base by either taking lessons to read music, or by teaching yourself chord progressions.

Children who learn to play songs often do so the traditional or the “classical” way. They take lessons with a music instructor who may teach them skills such as moving down the C-scale, fretting, the proper way to strum or pick a song. Children may or may not be taught using real music. In other words, they may learn notes, how to read sheet music, and even play some chords, but they may not ever learn to play along to an actual song.

It’s the same for adults who want to learn to play songs. They have a choice of learning via the traditional or “classical” method, but they also have a choice that many kids do not. They can choose to skip the strict memorization of notes and sheet music and opt to learn through the learning of patterns or chords. Sometimes, these methods are combined and have presently been dubbed learning through power chords.

Learning to play your favorite melody is much more enjoyable than learning

in the classical sense. Unless you want to obtain a degree in musical theory with a focus on the guitar, you might consider teaching yourself through learning software, CDs, DVDs, and books. If you aren’t disciplined enough to learn by yourself, or still would enjoy having someone show you the ropes during your first few months of playing, then you might take lessons from an instructor. If you cannot afford an instructor or there is not one nearby, maybe you have a friend or relative who can show you the basics of playing through chords or power chords. Different learning methods, when all combined, will give you the best overall results.

Learning to play songs through the listening, watching, and learning chord progression is one of the quickest and satisfying ways to learn to play your own style of music. Using a metronome is one great way to practice the timing of your music too. If you can start out playing a song, or part of one, slowly, then increasing your speed, is one progressive way to learn and not develop bad timing habits. If your goal is to learn to play melodies on the guitar, then it is important that you make a conscious decision about how you are going to get there. Explore your choices, mix methods if you want, but remember to practice daily and give yourself a pat on the back after each session.
